Scholarship Interview Tips

Before The Interview

Prepare in advance.
Ahead of time, consider the purpose of the interview. Review your UC application for admission as it may be brought up during your interview. Create mock questions you think might be asked. When formulating your answers, remember to emphasize your strengths.

Practice your interview skills with a friend.
Review your interview skills aloud with someone and brainstorm hypothetical situations the interview may encompass. Ask your friend to count the number of times you say "like" and "you know" to make sure you aren`t overusing such filler phrases.

Consider bringing letters of recommendation.
Letters of recommendation are optional. Submit them to your interviewer at the time of your interview. (Letters of recommendation sent to the office may not be considered.)

The Interview

Dress appropriately.
Dress comfortably for your interview, but not too casually. Rule of thumb: wear business casual and no more than two colors. If you are interviewing on the UC Berkeley campus, wear walking shoes.

Arrive on time.
Create a positive first impression by arriving on time.

Monitor your body language.
Good posture gives a confident impression. Keep your hands in your lap or on the table to seem calm rather than touching your hair and face.

Monitor your speech.
Answer in complete sentences when possible, avoiding interjections of "uhm", "like", and "you know". When asked a yes/no question, follow up with a brief, interesting detail that the interviewer might remember. If you don`t understand a question, it`s perfectly acceptable to ask the interviewer to rephrase or repeat the question.

Make eye contact.
Make eye contact throughout the interview. Avoid looking at the floor or ceiling while listening and speaking.

Volunteer information.
When offering information during an interview, remember that it`s the interviewer`s job to decide what`s pertinent and what`s not. It`s your job to "flesh out" your application with details that will convince the interviewer of your strengths. Prepare answers to questions you think might highlight desirable qualities or accomplishments. Phrase what you say about yourself positively. If you are asked why you performed poorly in the sciences, emphasize your talent in creative writing, for example, instead of enumerating excuses.

Be prepared with a good close. At the end of the interview, you may be asked whether you have questions or something to add. You can ask a question, add information that you prepared before the interview, or follow up on a topic covered during the interview itself. Good closure shows that you have been engaged in the exchange. Thank the interviewer for giving you the opportunity to meet and make a timely exit, i.e. avoid running out, but also refrain from lingering.

Tips to Help You Get College Scholarship

Scholarships are great because they provide free money for college that doesn't have to be paid back. There are many different types of scholarships out there.

These 10 Tips will help you get scholarships to pay for college:

   1.   Start ASAP and apply early - There are many scholarships that have early application deadlines, so don't miss out on these opportunities.
   2.   Search locally - A local scholarship is probably your best chance for getting a scholarship. There are many special scholarships just for locals. This means it will be less competitive as there are less applicants. Local banks, clubs, grocery stores, businesses, organizations, and churches are all potential sources for local community scholarships.

You should also check state-funded scholarships. States have lots of money to disperse when it comes to providing education.

   3.   Read the requirements carefully - Make sure you are eligible right from the star, so you’re not wasting your time. Also, never pay to apply for a scholarship these are usually scams. Read more about Scholarship Scams.

   4.   Follow instructions carefully - Any initial errors can get your scholarship application easily denied. Proofread it. Have someone else proofread it!

   5.   Ask questionse - Make sure the application is completed right. If you are not sure about something in the scholarship application, don't hesitate to ask.

   6.   Neatly presentable, neatly packaged - Send the scholarship application via certified mail or, better yet, FedEx, making your application look professional and stand out from others.

   7.   Visit the college/financial counselor at your School - The counselor may be able to lead you to scholarships you don't know about or that aren't listed on the web. You want to find scholarships that aren't very competitive. These are typically scholarships not heavily advertised.

   8.   Check School Specific Scholarships - Check with the school/college you would like to attend. Usually there are many school-specific scholarships available. This may also help you in deciding what school/college to attend.

   9.    Be Active, Stay Active
      - Being in a sports team, club, or some type of community service will always better your chances at receiving a college scholarship.

  10.   Maintain your GPA - Keep your grades up. A higher GPA will make you eligible for more scholarships, thus increasing your chances of receiving additional funds.

PhD Studentship at University of Cambridge

Overview
The lifetime extension of existing highway and building reinforced concrete infrastructure is a priority for economic prosperity and sustainability. This project will examine the use of fibre reinforced polymers (FRPs) for the shear strengthening of slab-on-beam reinforced concrete structures typically used in large bridges or buildings.

The mechanics of shear failures in unstrengthened, and strengthened, reinforced concrete structures are complex. An innovative experimental investigation of local behaviour will initially be undertaken using prototype specimens. The results` implications will be used to investigate the overall behaviour of T-beams of different depths, with both testing and analytical modelling of unstrengthened and strengthened beams. The performance of practical slab-on-beam structures, and the impact of strengthening interventions to extend service life, will then be assessed.

A PhD Studentship at the University of Cambridge, Department of Engineering, is available for UK/EU students from 5 January 2012. Applicants must have a strong first degree in a relevant engineering or science subject. Knowledge of structural analysis and design and/or mechanics of materials is particularly desirable. The studentship includes maintenance at the standard EPSRC rates and covers approved College and University fees for UK/EU over a 3.5 year period.

The International PhD Program Democracy, Knowledge, and Gender in a Transnational World (IPP Transnational) - Germany

The Faculty of the Social Sciences at the Goethe University counts among those in the Federal Republic of Germany with a wealth of tradition and diversity in teaching and research perspectives. For its duration through the end of 2013, its international PhD program Democracy, Knowledge, and Gender in a Transnational World in short IPP Transnational, will be supported through funding the Faculty procured in 2010 within the scope of the DAAD call for submissions International Promovieren in Deutschland (IPID). The implementation of the program substantially profits from the expertise of the International Postgraduate Center Social Sciences (IPC), which houses the IPP Transnational and whose funding and supervisory structure ideally complements its range of offers.

The program admits thirty PhD candidates a year. In terms of content, the IPP Transnational’s profile connects three thematic fields that combine central research issues of the 21st century. Emphasis is placed on the interrelation between current transnational social transformations and the development of democracy, the (re)formation of the gender order, as well as bioscientific findings and practices.

The program contributes to the internationalization of the training of PhD candidates in the Faculty of the Social Sciences and is designed to make studying for a PhD at the Goethe University even more attractive, in particular for international junior scholars. The candidates will be directly integrated into the top-level research currently being performed by the professors participating in the program. Besides the attractive program run by the IPC, additional supervision measures are available to PhD candidates at the IPP Transnational that provide ideal conditions for attaining a PhD and precipitate completion of the thesis.

A seminal element of the IPP Transnational is the establishment of exchange programs with selected international partner universities as well as the promotion of sandwich and binational PhDs. After successfully completing the program, the initiators envision the PhD candidates as having enjoyed comprehensive academic training at the highest level; decisively expanded their theoretical, methodical, and interdisciplinary competencies; and acquired multidisciplinary key qualifications that enable them to begin a promising career both within or outside the university.

Please use the menu bar at the left in order to obtain further information about the program’s goals, offers, and IPP Transnational application details.

The IPP Transnational is financed through funding by the DAAD and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Admission Procedure
An international call for applications to the IPP Transnational program is issued twice a year for the admission of fifteen PhD candidates per term on February 15 and July 15. Interviews to assess an applicant’s suitability take place one month before the admission deadlines. Candidate can receive an allowance toward the cost of their trip to the interview. If accepted into the PhD program, the selected candidates are given the status of “conditional admission” to the Faculty of the Social Sciences. Unrestricted acceptance as a PhD candidate should occur by the next possible deadline, i.e., April 1 or October 1. The period between acceptance into the PhD program and acceptance into the Faculty is used to revise the submitted PhD proposal, in particular with respect to the work and time schedule; decide on a first and, if possible, second supervisor of the PhD thesis; and to conclude a PhD agreement that identifies the rights and obligations between supervisors, candidates, and those in charge of the program during the doctoral phase.

Application Requirements
Graduates of sociology, political science and anthropology both from Germany and abroad can apply who have an above-average university degree (MA, first state examination, diploma, or the like) and a sound knowledge of English and whose dissertation project ties in with the IPP Transnational’s research themes.

Application Documents
A complete application consists of the following:

    * a five-page dissertation project proposal in German or English in line with the IPP Transnational’s research profile. The proposal shall contain information about the state of research in the selected theme, about the project’s research question derived therefrom, about the steps to be taken to deal with the research question, as well as about the theme’s embeddedness in theory and the selection of the method to be applied
    * two letters of reference
