UK - Newcastle Business School Studentships 2010 in Dietary Change - Northumbria University, UK

Summary of Research Project
Food 2030, the UK Government’s strategic response to developing a sustainable food supply chain, suggests a need to reduce our consumption of meat and its impact on our health and the environment. To date, accounting for the environmental impact of foodstuffs has primarily seen the advancement and streamlining of supply-side life-cycle analysis techniques to measure embedded carbon emissions of products. A notable outcome of much of this research in the food industry has been the realisation that meat products are significantly carbon-inefficient when compared to, for example, grain or vegetable products (e.g. Williams et al., 2006). However, in addition to this, ‘meat alternative’ products may also be associated with other win-win opportunities across the health and sustainability agenda, such as lower fat content, reduced salt, reduced water use or a smaller land use footprint.

Such findings have led to recommendations for reductions in the meat content of diets (e.g. IPCC, 2008). Although wholesale changes in consumer diets or consumption habits is an unlikely achievable goal in the short term, it is possible that improving demand for meat-substituting products could provide a means for better achievement of sustainability and quality of life targets. Despite growing media coverage of these issues consumer uptake of meat free choices within the UK remains limited. There is a clear need to understand the consumer within this emerging debate and the issues that drive market demand and /or create disengagement.

This research, co-sponsored by Premier Foods Ltd., seeks to investigate the factors that influence market demand for meat substitutes and meat free products. Segments of consumers that share common behavioural characteristics will be identified to provide a better understanding individual consumer preferences. Specific research questions that may be addressed in the project include:

* What understanding do UK consumers have of current and emerging the issues of food security – what’s hot and what’s not?
* What are the barriers and enabling factors that influence behavioural change in the meat free sector?
* How can consumers be segmented in terms of both attitude and behaviour?
* What voluntary, policy, and other alternative mechanisms could be developed or structured to influence behavioural change in this sector.

The outcomes will be linked with those from other similar on-going projects being undertaken by the co-sponsor including work at Imperial College and Liverpool University that are examining the impact of dietary change on health and environment.

* Full project description

Details of research training to be undertaken as part of this project

The student will be expected to undertake a tailored programme of training by attending subject specific training delivered within the School and generic skills development training delivered by the Graduate School. Students will also attend compulsory training sessions related to their milestones. They will be expected to reflect upon their training requirements by using their training needs plan.

The key lies in scholarship strategy and creating a successful approach to finding and applying for awards. We’ve put together some advice on scholarship application strategies to help you improve your chances of winning scholarships.

Perhaps the most basic scholarship application strategyis to apply for scholarships you have the best chance of winning. While this seems obvious enough on the surface, figuring out what these scholarships are does require some thought. A good first step is to do a free scholarship search, like the one available at Scholarships.com. By completing a profile that includes many of your personal strengths and interests, you can allow someone else to do the initial legwork for you when it comes to finding scholarships. You’ll want to start early—if you begin to investigate scholarship options when you’re a junior in high school (or even sooner), you’ll have a heads up on the competition.

After you’ve finished your scholarship search, you can begin narrowing the list down to awards you think you have the best chance of winning. Perhaps you’re an excellent writer, you’ve had a truly unique experience, or you are fascinated with the subject of a scholarship competition. Whatever the reason, there are likely to be scholarships that stand out as awards for things you can do, and do well.

Beyond deciding which scholarships to apply to, you should play to your strengths in constructing your scholarship application. Everything you put in your application should be designed to highlight your strengths as an applicant for that particular scholarship, including the materials written by someone else. For example, if you need a letter of recommendation, ask someone who knows you well and can speak to your strengths, rather than someone with an impressive title or a friendly attitude who may not be able to go into the level of detail that scholarship providers would like to see.

Write a Killer Essay

A large part of your time and energy when applying for scholarships will be devoted to writing scholarship essays. Many scholarship applications require at least one essay and a large number of scholarship reviewers will rely heavily on the essay in choosing a scholarship winner. There are things you can do to write effective scholarship essays that save you time and highlight your strengths as an applicant.

Even if you don’t consider yourself a particularly skilled wordsmith, you can write a scholarship-worthy essay if you put in the time and effort the task requires. By learning about your audience and what they want (one way to do this is by reading about the scholarship contest’s mission and reading previous years’ winning essays), you can better tailor your scholarship application to their needs. This will immediately set you apart from the students who didn’t bother to figure out exactly where they were submitting their scholarship application. If you do it right, you can incorporate this strategy into a plan for efficient essay writing to maximize your results. Beyond that, following other basic guidelines for the scholarship application process and scholarship essay writing will keep you on track and help you create success in your scholarship search.

Pay Attention to the Details

The most useful, and often overlooked, scholarship application strategy is paying attention to details. From making note of scholarship application deadlines to getting organized to formatting essays, paying attention to details can make the difference between winning a scholarship and finding your essay at the top of the reject pile. Be sure to always follow the rules, no matter how tiny or arbitrary, and to observe appropriate scholarship application etiquette. Taking these steps will ensure that it’s the substance of your scholarship application that stands out, not the errors in its presentation

The FCS is composed of academic staff drawn from Swiss universities. Scholarship awards are made on the basis of academic and scientific excellence.

Germany - European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations

European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations: The programme combines expertise in migration studies with intersecting fields, such as gender studies, cultural studies, and education and development studies.

The programme combines the European JMMIR network and the Euro-African IMMIS network. Consortium members are: University of Oldenburg (UOL), Germany, University of Stavanger (UiS), Norway, University of Nova Gorica, Slovenia, University of South Bohemia, Czech Republic, Ahfad University for Women, Sudan plus Makerere University and Mbarara University of Science & Technology in Uganda.

Focus:

The two key terms of reference for this study programme are migration and intercultural relations. Migration is understood here as encompassing all forms of international migration, voluntary as well as forced movements. Internal displacement, prominent especially in African contexts, will also be addressed. Intercultural relations include not only communication and other forms of interaction between the majority and resident minorities/diasporic communities within nation states but also interethnic relations in the (inter-)national arena and beyond nation states – including multinational settings and concepts such as multiculturalism or cosmopolitanism.

There are four programme main focus:
Gender
Development
Representation
Education

The focus  serve as the foundation students use to develop their individual specialisation and profile, e.g. by combining them with a geographic focus involving one or more of the countries in the partnership, potentially also linked to individual language skills. The language of instruction is English, but students will be encouraged to enhance bi- or multilingual language skills.

Scholarship:

When applying for EMMIR, applicants are invited to apply for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship (except if they have benefitted from such a scholarship before). Applicants will be informed if they are awarded a scholarship with the admission notification. There are two different forms of scholarships, Category A and Category B. The scholarships’ terms depend on the student’s country of origin/residence and main academic and/or professional activity.

Category A scholarships are available for applicants who:
-are neither resident in one of the 27 EU member states or in an EEA-EFTA country (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland)
-nor carried out their main academic and/or professional activity for more than 12 months in any of the EU/EEA-EFTA member states in the last five years.

Category B scholarships are available for applicants who:
-are resident in one of the 27 EU member states or in an EEA-EFTA country (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland) and/or
-regardless of their residence carried out their main academic and/or professional activity for more than 12 months in any of the EU/EEA-EFTA member states in the last five years.

The Consortium charges the following participation costs to be paid to the consortium:
-4000 € per semester for Category A students.
-2000 € per semester for Category B students.

The participation costs cover all programme activities and health insurance; they do not include the hosting university’s registration and student service fees, room and board as well as other living expenses and travel. For required travel see mobility path. In addition, students will have to pay the partner universities’ registration and social service fees at the university they attend.
